The anticipated sequel to Eddie Murphy classic Coming To America is being sold by distributor Paramount Pictures to Amazon Studios, in a deal worth roughly $125 million. Titled Coming 2 America, the film will premiere on Amazon Prime on December 18.
According to Variety, final details are being hammered out including “two complex consumer marketing tie-ins with McDonald’s and Crown Royal, which are expected to transfer over to Amazon Studios with the film.”
As Amazon Studios chief Jennifer Salke was on the hunt for more commercial fare, Paramount had been exploring its options as movie theaters continue to close and blockbuster films are forced to shift their release dates.
Eddie Murphy will reprise his role as Prince Akeem, who is set to become king of the fictional country Zamunda when he discovers he has a son he never knew about in America. Akeem and Semmi set off to America to honor the former king’s dying wish to groom his grandson as the crown prince.
Arsenio Hall and James Earl Jones will reprise their roles, while Tracy Morgan, Leslie Jones, and Wesley Snipes join the supporting cast.
