While appearing on David Letterman’s Netflix show My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, Lizzo explained why she’s become particularly annoyed with her status as an activist being contingent upon her race and body type.
“I’m sick of being an activist just because I’m fat and Black,” Lizzo told Letterman. “I want to be an activist because I’m intelligent, because I care about issues, because my music is good, [and] because I want to help the world.”
While being a champion of body positivity, Lizzo expressed how exhausting it can get by receiving constant attention due solely to her body. She discussed how the body-shamers made her feel but was particularly perturbed by those who were apparent allies. “I didn’t like it when people condemned me for it, and it also kinda rubbed me the wrong way when I was praised, like, ‘You’re so brave,’” she said. “They thought that they were complimenting me by saying that I was unapologetic, and I’m like, ‘What do I have to apologize for?'”
