Sources announced Wednesday that Jordan will direct “Creed III,” along with producing and starring as Adonis Creed in the film slated to arrive in theaters Thanksgiving 2022.
“Directing has always been an aspiration, but the timing had to be right. ‘Creed III’ is that moment,” Jordan said in the studio’s statement.
The “Black Panther” star, who was named People’s “Sexiest Man Alive” in November, called this period “a time in my life where I’ve grown more sure of who I am, holding agency in my own story, maturing personally, growing professionally, and learning from the Greats like Ryan Coogler, most recently Denzel Washington, and other top tier directors I respect. All of which sets the table for this moment.”
Jordan said the franchise and the themes of the upcoming movie “are deeply personal to me. I look forward to sharing the next chapter of Adonis Creed’s story with the awesome responsibility of being its director and namesake.”
Jordan’s character is the son of the former boxing champion Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers), Rocky Balboa’s (Sylvester Stallone) former foe turned friend, who was killed in a “Rocky IV” match against Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren). Stallone, whose Rocky has starred in a mentorship role with each “Creed” film, directed four “Rocky” films: “Rocky II,” “Rocky III,” “Rocky IV” and 2006’s “Rocky Balboa.”
Ryan Coogler, who directed Jordan in “Black Panther” and 2015’s “Creed,” praised the decision in the statement, saying it was “an honor to help bring the Creed franchise to life.” Coogler will produce the film. There are several other movies that Jordan has directed as well.
