Pharrell took to Instagram on Monday (March 29) to reveal that his cousin, 25-year-old Donovan Lynch, was killed on Friday night just a block from a shooting that injured eight and killed 2 people in Virginia Beach.
Pharrell shared a photo of Lynch along with the caption, “The loss of these lives is a tragedy beyond measure. My cousin Donovon was killed during the shootings. He was a bright light and someone who always showed up for others. It is critical my family and the other victims’ families get the transparency, honesty and justice they deserve. Virginia Beach is the epitome of hope and tenacity and, as a community, we will get through this and come out even stronger.”
Lynch, a Virginia Beach resident, was an offensive lineman for the University of Virginia’s College at Wise during the 2017 and 2018 seasons. He graduated from the school in 2019.
The Virginia Beach chapter of the NAACP released a statement regarding Lynch’s death, stating it was “not surprised” that the body camera was not activated during the incident. The statement adds, “We are watching and listening for the department’s inquiry into this shooting and expect a thorough and expeditious report. The community is waiting!”
This comes amid claims from Virginia Beach Police Chief Paul Neudigate that Lynch was holding a handgun when he was shot by a five-year veteran who worked in the department’s Special Operations Division. The officer has been placed on administrative leave during the ongoing investigation of the incident.
