Update: FL Doctor Arrested as Leader of Plot to Assassinate President of Haiti

Update 07/12/2021 4:19pm:

Christian Emmanuel Sanon, a 63-year-old Haitian man and self-described doctor living

in Florida, has been arrested for allegedly plotting to assassinate Haitian

president Jovenel Moïse in order to take the presidency for himself.

There have been several arrests made and people implicated in the murder of President

MoÏse, but the Haitian government publicly named Sanon as the leader in the alleged

attempted coup. Haiti’s national police chief, Léon Charles stated that Sanon arrived in

Haiti last week via a private plane, and he is alleged to have hired a private Venezuelan

security company based in Florida to recruit the people who pulled off the murder.

The Washington Post also pointed to a 2011 video that is titled “Dr. Christian Sanon—

Leadership for Haiti,” where Sanon Haiti’s condemned leaders as corrupt, stating,

“They don’t care about the country, they don’t care about the people… We can’t take it

anymore. We need new leadership that will change the way of life.”

Authorities who raided Sanon’s home said they found boxes of bullets, shooting targets,

and several Dominican Republican license plates in his home. They also found a D.E.A.

cap, which some felt was connected to reports that the assassins who killed Moïse falsely

identified themselves as Drug Enforcement Administration agents before gaining access

to his home and killing him. National police chief Léon Charles also revealed that one of

the arrested suspects called Sanon after the murder, and Sanon then allegedly contacted

the supposed intellectual masterminds of the plot.

There has been doubt cast on whether Sanon could afford to carry out such an expensive

plot, as some of the suspected assailants have claimed they were paid as much as $3,000

a month to take part in the plot. The Miami Herald obtained public records, which show

that Sanon claimed he was making $60,000 a year in a 2013 bankruptcy filing. He also

claimed he had $400,000 in debt. Other suspected leaders involved have yet to be

Interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph spoke on the situation, stating, “An unidentified

group of individuals, some of whom were speaking in Spanish, attacked the private

residence of the President of the Republic and mortally wounded him.” A high-ranking

Haitian government official added, “These were mercenaries.”

Joseph added that first lady Martine Moïse “was wounded by a bullet and the necessary

measures are being taken.” He then stated, “The security situation of the country is

under the control of the Haitian National Police and the Haitian Armed Forces. All

White House press secretary Jen Psaki reacted to the news, telling MSNBC, “We will be

helpful in any way to the people of Haiti, to the government of Haiti, if there’s an

president, of course, will be briefed by his national security team this morning.”

During an interview with CNN, Psaki added, “We stand ready and stand by them to

provide any assistance that is needed … it’s important that people of Haiti know that.”
