The story of when a Florida man named Walter Hickox fought off a bear with his bare hands may live on in his family for many years to come and thankfully so can he.
A security camera located near the porch area of his family’s home captured his physical altercation with the carnivoran mammal and after escaping the fight without a major injury, Walter Hickox’s emotions were on high. In fact, as he walked away from the camera lens, viewers can still hear audio of him saying, “Oh my God, I just got attacked by a bear!”
For many, the video will go down as an extreme act of bravery. But for this Daytona Beach native, it was just the natural instinct of a family man who was trying to protect his loved ones.
“Not a lot went through my head at the moment, other than what’s going to happen if he gets past me and into the house where the rest of my dogs and my wife was at,” Hickox said.
The bear has not been captured yet by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation but in the event that it is, the organization has an obligation, per company policy, that the animal must be put down to ensure the safely of any other human beings that it might encounter in the future.
